Several projects focussed on understanding molecular mechanisms of innate immunity in diverse Solanaceous crops (tomato, potato, pepper). For example, we studied how hormone‐dependent signaling affects defense against thrips in sweet pepper (Sarde et al., 2018), and determined how the late blight pathogen Phytophthora infestans is recognized by the potato resistance protein R1 (Du et al., 2018). We also have studied infection strategies of Phytophthora pathogens, in particular the roles of secreted enzymes in interaction with its hosts (Schoina et al., 2019; Meijer et al., 2018).
